Tell us about yourself and your business.
I am a stay at home/work from home mom to three children aged 3, 5 and 7. I’ve always worked, but when my husband decided to be a transport driver, I knew that I needed to be at home for the kids, so they had the attention they deserve.
A.H! Clothing Co. is a handmade business. We have super soft leggings, shirts and hoodies for women, kids and babies that we order in blank from a Canadian supplier. I customize them myself. Our goal is to inspire women and children to follow their dreams!
How did you get started?
I dabbled in direct sales, including with a leggings company, and I realized that the industry can be discriminatory towards plus size women by pricing larger sizes with a higher price tag. My sister in law was a consultant for the same company, and we knew this wasn’t fair and needed to change. We opened A.H! Clothing Co. in the spring of 2017 with the idea to end size discrimination, which is why all of our women’s sizes are the same price. This evolved into having a goal to inspire women and children that they can do anything they dream of. We do this via the messages in our clothing; our leggings are named with an inspirational message and our shirts have an inspirational message or life saying.
What have your simplified in your life to make room for your passion?
Life can never be simple, especially my crazy life! I make sure that I first give my kids the attention they need, and I work around that. I am often working at the kitchen table with them colouring or playing lego around me. After their bedtime is a great time for me to finish up what I need to that day, and afterwards I squeeze in a little “me time”.
What is the single best piece of advice you have ever received?
“Just keep going.”
You’re going to run into obstacles, but you need to keep going and work through it. If you get it right there will be success, if not, go back and try again.
What keeps you motivated?
My kids. I want them to see that I can be a great mom and a strong, and successful businesswoman.
What struggles do you face balancing motherhood and running your own business? How do you deal with them?
I don’t find much of a struggle between motherhood and my business. It’s more of a struggle being a single parent most of the time when my husbands on the road and getting in time for me. Thankfully the grandparents all live nearby, and I can depend on them for a little relief when I need it.
What book changed your life? How?
This sounds horrible, but I don’t read much.
What advice would you give someone that is just starting out?
Believe in yourself. In your journey you will doubt yourself, and you will have people that doubt you. Never lose grip of the reason why you are doing what you are doing. If you believe in yourself, you will make it through the storm.
What resource has made the biggest difference in your life?
My family, I know I can depend on them.
What quote or words do you live by?
“Have the courage to make your dreams come true.”
Ironically this is also a quote on one of our shirts.
